Mobil Mangere Goes Digital!
When Azad Sheikh embarked upon his project to rebuild his South Auckland service station his plan was to utilise the services of the most professional organizations he could procure at competitive prices. This included protecting his business, staff and property with the most up to date technology supplied by true professionals that he could rely on to get the job done On time and within budget.

Through his CCTV Solution, Azad is able to view any part of his business at the touch of a button quickly recalling transactional information and events that occur within his business in a matter of seconds. Within a few days of opening, a relatively minor incident occurred which could have turned ugly and using his CCTV system Azad was able to quickly track the event as it unfolded identifying the three people concerned and positively identifying their vehicle He then downloaded the information to DVD in a format that can be viewed on almost any PC.

CCTV is a very powerful tool when trying to resolve undesirable problems and challenges of todays retail oil business. Drive offs and aggravated robbery are an all too common offence being committed against our front line staff making it even more important to clearly identify the persons responsible.

The CCTV system at Mobil Mangere was designed and implemented by Rob Riches and his team at CCTV Solutions Limited using a combination of Panasonic and Pelco cameras and digital recoding by GE Interlogix which together provides high quality images that get results.

Azad says: Rob Riches and his great team of highly competent technicians exceeded our expectations in the design, supply, installation, commissioning and training of our new digital hi-tech surveillance system. We highly recommend CCTV Solutions and Rob Riches in particular for any surveillance and security work including fire alarm systems.

The countrys largest Mitre 10 Mega Store opened in Petone on the 29th of April. The $22 million development in Bouverie Street replaces the Mitre 10 Home and Trade store in Lower Hutt and is one of more than 20 such stores being opened over the next three years. Mega stores have already opened for business at Invercargill, Hastings, Christchurch, Tauranga and three in Auckland. The Wanganui Mitre 10 Mega is due to open later this year.
Spanning a massive 2.65 hectares (almost four rugby fields), the Petone store is expected to inject some $3.8 million into the local economy and create up to 80 full and part-time jobs. Designed as a one stop shop, the new store displays a range of some 48,000 products. The Managing Director of the Petone store, Martyn Lockyer and his wife, Joanne, have sold hardware since they bought their first store in Kawerau in 1978.
Apart from the usual retail area known to all Mitre 10 regulars, the new store also includes a garden centre, drive through timber yard, cafe, kids play area and a new concept for Mitre 10, a Tough Tool Hire Centre where customers can hire some of those tools that the normal do-it-yourselfer would not otherwise have the need for at home.
Mega StoreObviously security management of such a vast area and large customer flow, required more than just an anti-theft system. With many hundreds of metres of aisles, a number of entrances, delivery docks, yards and administration areas to monitor, it took some weeks for the Auckland company, CCTV Solutions Limited (formerly SLS Electronic Security Limited) to design and build the extensive surveillance system required to do the job.
Security CamerasThe system consists of a combination of over 40 fixed and controllable (PTZ) cameras that can track to almost any part of the store.
A number of cameras (less than 4 years old) taken from the old Mitre 10 site in Lower Hutt were included as these are fully compatible with the selected digital recording and control protocols of the system. All cameras are high resolution DSP colour cameras, specifically selected for use within retail environments where cash and product identification is critical.
Carparks and driveways are also covered to provide protection for staff and customers vehicles whilst also allowing the tracking of offenders leaving the site and for the identification of vehicle registration plates as required.
A key component of the solution was to ensure everyone entering the premises is positively identified with TV/Monitors being positioned at the main entry points showing only the entry camera images which provides an excellent deterrent to would-be offenders. Other critical areas include, but are not limited to, every Point of Sale, all other entry and exit points and stock racks. Point of Sale Interface has also been designed for the system.
All cameras were strategically positioned in consultation with Rob Riches of CCTV Solutions Limited, Martyn Lockyer and Stephen Nelson, the Finance Manager of Mitre 10 Mega Petone, to provide optimum views of the most critical areas of the business under threat from internal and external theft and dishonesty. A number of future positions have also been cabled to provide even more flexibility into the future.
Robs experience as a CCTV Consultant and Loss Prevention trainer over the past 12 years enable him to provide the Mitre 10 Mega management team with some of the best advice possible in the design and implementation of their CCTV Solution.
The monitoring station Rob designed is manned by trained staff and consists of 6 x 14" colour monitors, a camera control keyboard/joystick controlled via a 48 input matrix switcher providing the ability to call up any camera to any monitor at any time.
Also in the monitoring room is a PC with control software which is linked via the business network back to the 2 x 24 channel DMS 180 111 Digital Video Recorders from Dallmeier Electronics of Germany. These high resolution recorders are ideally suited for complex CCTV installations such as that at the Petone Mitre 10 Mega store.
The DMS 180 111 DVR, supplied in New Zealand by C R Kennedy New Zealand Limited, is recognised internationally as the most accredited and acclaimed DVR for its easy to use, intelligent technology, its outstanding engineering, picture quality, performance and reliability.
DallmeierThe system enables rapid production of photo prints and video images for police prosecutions, staff related issues and/or any health and safety matters or indeed customer disputes which may need to be resolved.
Innovative thinking was required by Rob Riches and the team at CCTV Solutions to ensure that the design and installation of a comprehensive surveillance system for the Petone Mitre 10 Mega store was effectively accomplished at minimum cost.
As Petone Mitre 10 Mega stores Finance Manager, Stephen Nelson, put it in a letter of thanks, "This is the second time we have used CCTV Solutions for major installations and on both occasions we have been extremely satisfied with the end result. We also really appreciate the advice and guidance you gave us during the planning and installation stages which again meant that implementing a sophisticated camera and monitoring system was straightforward. I think it is your expertise that sets you apart from the competition and the fact that you are a specialist in this field."
It would seem that the term mission accomplished could be the best way of describing both the opening of the Petone Mitre 10 Mega store and its surveillance system.
