IP CCTV

A dynamic choice for commercial CCTV and home surveillance

CCTV technology has moved so fast that the idea of analog CCTV cameras is rapidly disappearing.

Moving forward, IP for CCTV is the only way to go - wireless IP cameras provide you with a far more secure and dynamic CCTV system for home security or business surveillance.

There are many differing IP video solutions available on the market today, so it’s critical to choose a CCTV consultant who can provide clear surveillance and CCTV advice.

Why we believe IP CCTV is the right step

WHAT IS IP CCTV?

People often ask, what’s the difference between an IP CCTV camera vs analog? Our answer? IP cameras are the future.

HOW DOES IP CCTV WORK?

It turns video images into data which is then transmitted over a network or internet connection. The key benefits over analog CCTV systems are:

  • Greater Flexibility - IP cameras can be installed on your existing Local Area Network (LAN) infrastructure then transmitted via the internet and/or using wireless technology. The images can then be managed for recording, storage & viewing almost anywhere within a network.
  • Higher Quality Images - Even though IP CCTV has been available for more than 20 years, it’s only in the last few years that IP CCTV technology has matured. This has lead to major developments in megapixel and High Definition (HD CCTV) technology.

Ways we use IP CCTV technology with our clients

IP/HDCVI SYSTEM DESIGN

Getting the right fit for your security needs is integral - which is why we put a lot of emphasis on CCTV system design. We provide IP-based & HDCVI CCTV solutions using the latest technology from trusted brands like Dahua, Avigilon, Axis, & Panasonic CCTV.

We can integrate ‘Open Architecture’ Video Management System (VMS) such as Avigilon CCTV or more proprietary systems such as Dahua CCTV or HikVision CCTV systems.

IP TECHNOLOGY IN SERVICE STATIONS

Service stations are a high risk area, and there’s a real necessity to keep on top of technology for best protection. We’ve helped upgrade the CCTV systems of a number of service station chains to IP camera systems, scaling the projects to account for budgetary requirements.

Our ‘hybrid’ solution focuses on upgrading higher risk areas such as forecourt security and cash handling areas with HD cameras, while maintaining (for the time being) some analog cameras in lower risk or general surveillance areas. It’s a seamless system, while scaling costs for future CCTV maintenance.

IP TECHNOLOGY IN EDUCATION

New Zealand education facilities are well known for their multi-building layouts over large areas, which traditionally made it extremely difficult to deploy an analog CCTV system. IP tech alongside advanced video compression techniques, have changed that dramatically.

We can now comfortably incorporate IP CCTV into any education environment. With the added advantage of high bandwidth fibre backbones, large numbers of low bandwidth IP cameras can be deployed around education facilities for 24/7 video surveillance.

IP TECHNOLOGY IN RETAIL

Many of NZ’s larger retail stores are also upgrading their analogue CCTV systems - either to full IP camera systems or to a hybrid analog IP CCTV solution.

In one case we transferred more than fifty analogue cameras from one site to the customer’s new building and enhanced the solution with ‘hybrid’ recording and 1080P Full HD cameras in higher risk areas. The system was futureproofed by utilising CAT6 and fibre optic cabling for video transmission which will allow it to be migrated to a fully integrated IP system as they can manage.

IP TECHNOLOGY IN CARPARKS

We understand video surveillance in car parks presents its own obstacles, but CCTV technology has really changed how we can make things work for you.

Wide area coverage and obtaining registration numbers within the same image for LPNR CCTV is now readily possible.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between IP CCTV and HD CCTV?

IP CCTV cameras capture video image, compress and transmit in digital format over the network. The recorder is programmed with IP addresses to receive these streams and record to a NVR (network video recorder).

With HD CCTV, each camera has to be connected directly to the recorder and the recorder is responsible for collating picture information, compression and storage. These systems can be simpler and easier to manage, but don’t always work for the scope of a project or budget.

IP CCTV works better for people with network knowledge or already have structured cabling in place. Using existing cabling can be a real cost saver - WiFi can link multiple buildings. POE cabling can make lengthy cabling far more simplified.

Both HD and IP can be accessed over the network, mobile devices and tablets.

Can IP cameras work without internet?

An IP CCTV camera system will absolutely work without an internet connection. Without internet you can still view the cameras, record to a hard drive, and search through recorded footage using a monitor and a mouse plugged directly into the NVR.

That said, extensive remote viewing won’t be possible without being connected to the internet via WiFi or POE.

Are IP cameras safe?

IP CCTV cameras provide live video and audio feeds that you can access remotely using an internet browser. But access to the internet often adds a security risk. Many IP cameras on the market are vulnerable to digital snooping, but all the CCTV systems we advise and sell have a high level of security protection so you can ensure your data is secure.

Can I connect my IP CCTV to my phone?

You can view your CCTV feed through your phone, but there must be an internet connection to the camera. If you’re trying to view from the same location you should use a local Wi-Fi link, if available. If you are trying to connect remotely or there is no wireless link available, the camera needs to be connected to an Internet router.

The IP CCTV camera must also be configured to allow remote access. Most internet routers will by default prevent external access so the IP CCTV camera will need to be configured for the task. If you’re able to view the feed then there’s potential for others to be able to view the feed too. We always recommend professional installation and setup of CCTV systems for that very reason.
